A story of a dangerous woman who is simultaneously helpless in the knowledge of what she’s done and her vain fantasies of how she might escape, it is the perfect way to get anyone hooked on the series.Īs Princess Margaret, Bonham Carter (centre) is the best thing about her seasons of The Crown. Her jittery husband-killer was a beautiful portrait, sketched in less than half an hour, of comedic desperation mingled with tragic despair. It was quite a coup for Davies to score a name so big for the first episode of his sitcom about a crime-scene cleaner with a knack for complicated entanglements, and Bonham Carter delivered in spades.
